Breathing Fire

Featuring Keynote Speaker, Dr. Howard Frumkin, Senior Vice President & Director of TPL's Land and People Lab. Dr. Frumkin is Professor Emeritus of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington School of Public Health, where he served as Dean from 2010-2016. He is also a Hagler Fellow at Texas A&M University and previously held leadership roles at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Frumkin has authored and co-authored more than 300 scientific journal articles and 14 books on human, community and planetary health. He received his AB from Brown University, his MD from the University of Pennsylvania, his MPH and DrPH from Harvard University.

Panels will be moderated by Dr. Amy Tuininga, Director of the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies, and Chris Daggett, Board Chair of the New Jersey Civic Information Consortium and former regional administrator for the U.S. EPA.

Wildfires and Climate Change: Risk Factors and Impact on Public Health: Moderated by Dr. Amy Tuininga, the panel will explore connections between climate change, fire frequency, and air quality. Panelists will discuss how climate change impacts fire vulnerability in natural systems and related fire management strategies. The panel will address resulting air quality, impacts on public health, and what can be done to improve outcomes.

Air Quality and the Media: Framing Public Discourse: Moderated by Chris Daggett, panelists will explore the role of journalism in raising awareness about air quality and climate, and how news organizations can combat misinformation and guide public discourse. As the climate continues to shift, providing accurate and timely information to communities is critical for public health, and journalists are first-reporters/chroniclers in cases of climate emergencies such as the recent Canadian wildfires.

Parking will be in the Red Hawk Deck (link below), as we have vouchers available to all registrants who park there. Once you exit the parking garage on the first floor, please walk towards campus, go up the stairs by the statues, and make a left at Susan Cole Hall. It should be the first building in front of you once you go up the stairs. When you begin walking, you will pass an outdoor amphitheater. If this is on your left you will know you are walking the right way. Continue going straight past Dickson Hall and then past the Feliciano School of Business. University Hall will be the next building, also on your left with a clock tower on it. The Conference Center is located on the seventh floor.
